Ballet Tucson presents
traditional ‘Nutcracker’

Ballet Tucson will present a traditional version of “The Nutcracker” on Dec. 23, 24 and 26 at Tucson Music Hall, 260 S. Church Ave.
The productions, complete with snowflakes, marching toy soldiers and giant mice, have entertained Tucson audiences for more than a decade.
Tickets cost $27 to $54, with discounts available for students. Show times are Dec. 23 at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 24 at 3 p.m. and Dec. 26 at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.

West Campus to host resource fair Nov. 16
West Campus will host a resource fair Nov. 16 to help students prepare for next semester. The first-time event will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the outdoor HRP courtyard.
“The purpose of the fair is really to allow students to gear up for the spring semester,” said Sara Hastings, student services advisor.
Tented booths will showcase a variety of academic, financial and medical resources available to students. There will also be an onsite advisor, resources from the library and counselors to aid with registration preparation.
Health care and child care booths will explain options available to students.
The Student Services and Student Life sponsors will also hold a raffle and promise a variety of fun activities.

Pima students receive trade scholarships
Two Pima Community College students were among 500 students nationwide who received trade scholarships awarded by Home Depot.
Dallas Watts and Eric Adams received $1,000 scholarships to reward their academic performance, leadership and work experience. The awards will assist with tuition, textbooks and tools for their trade.
The Trade Scholarship Program is designed to support building and construction trade students as they develop their skills.
It is open nationwide to students who enroll in building and construction trades at vocational or technical schools, colleges or universities.

Veterans Day parade downtown Nov. 11
The annual Veterans Day Parade in downtown Tucson will begin at 10:30 a.m. The parade starts near East 13th Street at South Sixth Avenue. It heads north to Broadway Boulevard, west to Granada Avenue and south to the Tucson Convention Center.
The Tucson VA Medical Center, 3601 S. Sixth Ave., will present a free concert, ceremony and refreshments at 2 p.m. Local musicians will perform a 90-minute patriotic tribute.

Dinner out can help Phi Theta Kappa
Pima Community College’s international honor society, Phi Theta Kappa, will hold a fundraiser at Applebee’s restaurants on Sept. 27.
Diners who eat at any Tucson Applebee’s location between 11 a.m. and closing can donate 10 percent of their tab by letting the server know they are dining out for Phi Theta Kappa.
Recent Phi Theta Kappa community service projects have included building a library for an orphanage in Mexico and participating in a Trek for Trash on ‘A’ Mountain.

Pima Community College is hosting debates for state House of Representatives candidates.
Debates for legislative districts 27 and 28 have already been held.
Remaining dates include:

Graduation ceremony to be held May 20

The 2010 ceremony for Pima Community College spring graduates will be held on Thursday, May 20, at 7 p.m. at the Tucson Convention Center Arena.
Graduates must arrive by 6 p.m. to check in at the Exhibition Hall. Graduates will receive an information card with their name and degree/certificate information.
For those who want to take graduation photos, Focus on Events will be in the Cochise/Apache Room on the ground level of the Convention Center between 4:30-6:30 p.m., and after the ceremony until 10 p.m.
Parking for the ceremony is free for graduates and their guests at designated lots. Parking on the east side of the convention center may be limited due to construction.
Graduates may bring as many guests as they wish. No tickets or reservations are needed.
Only graduates and dignitaries are allowed on the arena floor during the ceremony. Graduates will be seated in the order of line-up.
Caps and gowns are mandatory and can be purchased at all campus bookstores until Thursday, May 20, for $30.27. There will also be a limited selection of caps and gowns the day of graduation in the Exhibition Hall.
Graduates will receive a scroll in place of their degree/certificate, then return to their seats after receiving their scroll. The official document will be mailed within 12 weeks if all requirements are met.
PCC’s Multicultural Convocation, an event that celebrates the academic achievement and cultural diversity of PCC graduates, will be held Friday, May 7, at the West Campus gymnasium. Graduates must register for the convocation.

April 27 talk to discuss ‘scientific revolution’

Pima Community College physics instructor Tony Pitucco will give a lecture April 27 at 6 p.m. in the Community Board Room at PCC’s District Office, 4905 E. Broadway Blvd.
The talk, “The Emerging Scientific Revolution,” will discuss the physical and philosophical consequences of theories such as quantum mechanics and general relativity.
Pitucco holds a Ph.D. in applied mathematics, a M.S in mathematics and a master’s of education degree in Foundations of Education and Philosophy.
He has directed myriad research grants and has been honored as Arizona Professor of the Year. He has also been selected for a national Teaching Excellence Award – Top 50 Professors in the USA.
The lecture, part of PCC’s new Speakers’ Series, is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the provost/executive vice chancellor and the PCC Faculty Senate.

Jane Goodall to speak at Northwest Campus

World-renowned primatologist Jane Goodall will speak at Pima Community College’s Northwest Campus on April 28.
The free lecture will begin at 2 p.m. in the Northwest Campus second-floor amphitheater. Arrive early to ensure a good seat.
2010 marks the 50th anniversary of Goodall’s landmark chimpanzee behavioral research. Her lecture, Gombe and Beyond: The Next 50 Years, will focus on the work she has done, the changes she has seen and the role everyone must take to make a better future.
A book signing and sales of Jane Goodall Institute merchandise will take place after the talk.
