As the midway point in their respective seasons has come to pass, both the Pima Community College men’s and women’s golf teams have begun to turn up the heat after a shaky start for both squads.
Within the last couple of weeks, each team recorded its best finishes of the season thus far.
The men saw their ranking in the NCJAA Division I golf poll rise to No. 19.

April 7-8: Chandler-Gilbert Invitational:
The Pima Community College women’s golf team competed in its sixth tournament of the season on Saturday and Sunday at the Chandler-Gilbert Invitational.
The Aztecs took third place with a score of 693. MesaCommunity College was first with 638, and Chandler-Gilbert Community College placed second with 656.
Esquivel took fourth place in the individual standings. She shot a four-over par 75 on Sunday and finished with a two-day total of 156.
Freshman Julianne Gonzalez finished in 12th place with a two-day score of 175. Freshman Clara Solano improved in her second round as she shot a 180. Sophomore Juliana Perez had a 182.
April 2-3: Paradise Valley Invitational:
The Pima Community College women’s golf team competed at the Paradise Valley Invitational.Their fifth tournament of the season took place at the Wildfire Golf Course in Phoenix.
With a two-day total of 793, the Aztecs took fourth place. Therst day together, the women hada score of 398. The second day, they had a score of 410. Sophomore Araceli Esquivelonce again finished in the Top 5 in the tournament. This was her fourth Top 5 finish. Esquivel tops fifth place with a score of 169.
Sophomore Tanna Cole finished in 13th place with a score of 204. Sophomore Julianna Perez shot a 211 and finished 16th just above her freshmen teammates.
“The course was great, but it was also very challenging,” Perez said. “Altogether as a team, we didn’t have a great second day.”
Freshmen Elizabeth Satterfield and Julienne Gonzalez both tied for 17th place with a final two-day score of 213.

March 26-27: Eastern Arizona College Invitational:
Participating in its fourth tournament of 2018, the Pima Community College men’s golf team secured its best finish of the year so far by finishing in third place at the Eastern Arizona College Invitational in Thatcher, Arizona.
The Aztecs hadn’t finished inthe top half of an eight-school invitational all season long. Their two-day score of 592 was enoughto see Pima nish behind only South Mountain Community College, who finished in first place with a score of 564, and Eastern Arizona College, who finished in second with a 568.
For the third time this season, Cooper Cordova was the top finisher in the individual standings for the Aztecs, as the sophomore’s two-day score of 142 was good enough for a fourth place spot on the leaderboard at the end of the event.
With only two invitationals now remaining before the regional tournament, it’s make- or-break time for the No. 19 golf team in the country.
