Even though she only stands at 5 ft. 2 inches tall, Pima’s freshman pitching sensation Paige Adair packs a lot of punch and has an enormous heart. She’s off to a fast start with her Aztec career at 15-1 and helping the team to a winning record. I decided to sit down with her and get to know her a little bit more.
Q: Why did you choose Pima and how do you like it so far?
A: I chose Pima because one the location, I loved Arizona and I come from New Mexico, so I love the warm weather and I hate the cold. Which is weird because lately there’s been a lot of cold weather. Also I’m from Aztec, New Mexico and when I was being recruited coach used that a lot, saying it was fate to play for Pima. I also love my team, they have definitely kept me in check and sane being so far away from home, which has helped a lot. They are good people and I really like that.
Q: How did you start playing softball and who influenced you?
A: I started playing tee-ball about 5 like pretty much everyone does. My mom also played softball growing up and was a catcher, so I was a catcher growing up until high school where I started pitching.
Q: Do you want to make softball a career? If not what are your plans and major?
A: I want to play softball as long as I can, which is realistically 4 years. Even though there is a pro softball league the chances are small I make it there. My major is Elementary Education, but I have been talking with some teammates who are doing Criminal Justice so I am looking into that as well.
Q: What do you enjoy most about softball?
A: The competitiveness of it and I like being a pitcher because I like having the game in my hands and being in control of every situation. It tests you, they call it the game of failure. You will fail sometimes, but you will succeed sometimes and that’s what I like about it. Every time you go out there you have a new chance to redeem yourself from the last time.
Q: You excited to start 15-1?
A: Oh yeah, I wish it was 15-0, but it happens and it’s a really good start. We just have to finish the season and stay healthy.
Q: What do you enjoy doing during your spare time?
A: I hang out with my roommates, one of them is from the same place which has been huge to help me get through this. My other roommate is from Utah, so we are all there for each other because we are pretty far from home.
Paige is one of the most down to earth people you can meet. It was so evident watching practice the love she has for the game and her teammates. They are singing, joking and laughing all while being serious when needed. She has that it factor and is at peace when on the field you can tell that is where she belongs.
