Pima’s record overshadows great play

The Aztecs volleyball team ends the season on a seven-game losing streak to finish with a 7-18 record.
It was a struggle for Pima all season, as they couldn’t get a winning streak going at any point to jump start their season.

Oct. 27: PCC 0, Mesa Community College 3

The Aztecs would go on to lose in straight sets to Mesa Community College in the final game of the season 17-25, 19-25, 19-25.
Pima kept the first set close, coming to within three points, but the Thunderbirds scored six of the final seven points to win the first set.

The Thunderbirds grabbed a big lead early in the second set and the Aztecs never came close. Pima made the third set the closest yet, trailing by only two points at 12-14. However, they couldn’t take that extra step and allowed Mesa to take the third set. Kayli Riesgo had 37 assists and 12 digs, and Kaitlin Schmich had 11 kills and 13 digs.
Those two double-doubles were followed by Victoria Davis’s double-double as she had 17 kills and 14 digs.

Oct. 25: PCC 0, South Mountain CC 3

Pima fell in straight sets for second time in three matches, losing 12-25, 17-25, 15-25 to South Mountain Community College. Victoria Davis’s eight kills and 14 digs and Anissa Conrad’s 16 digs were not enough to help the Aztecs to victory.

Oct. 18: PCC 0, Scottsdale Community College 3

The Aztecs were hoping to end their four-game losing streak in a big way, with a victory over the No. 8 Artichokes at home. However, it wasn’t meant to be as Pima lost in straight sets 11-25, 20-25, 19-25 and were swept in the season series.

The Aztecs never could get a foothold in the match and couldn’t mount a serious challenge, but they managed to pad their stats.
Kaitlin Schmich had 14 assists and 13 digs, while Gianni Romero gathered 12 assists and nine digs. Victoria Davis snagged nine kills and 12 digs, with Anissa Conrad getting 11 digs. Kylee Ashment, Jamie Ricksecker and Lyrica Tavesi combined for five kills and six blocks.
The Aztecs only have two matches left in the regular season, and both are at home.

Oct. 17: PCC 1, Eastern Arizona College 3

Pima couldn’t end its losing streak on Tuesday night as they fell in four sets to the Gila Monsters, 26-28, 18-25, 25-21 and 17-25.
Losing 7-14 in the first set, the Aztecs were able to dig themselves out of the hole to take a lead 25-24. However, Eastern Arizona took advantage of some miscues to snag the victory.
When it came to the second set, the eventual outcome was never in doubt.
In the third set, the Aztecs were up 16-8, but the Gila Monsters went on a run to put the score at 22-21.

Pima needed some players to stand up to finish off the set. Kaitlin Schmich had a huge kill and Jamie Ricksecker helped with a massive block, and the Aztecs took the set.
The comeback bid was short-lived, as again Eastern Arizona took a commanding lead in the fourth set and closed out the match with the victory.

Kylee Ashment had six kills and three blocks, while Gianni Romero had 18 assists and nine digs. Helping out with 19 assists was Kayli Riesgo.
Schmich and Davis each had double-doubles in the match, with Schmich getting 13 kills and 12 digs, and Davis adding 11 kills and 16 digs.
