Horoscope

By MICHELA WILSON

In honor of the full moon in Aries on Oct. 5, these horoscopes feature quotes by famous Aries, to help us all channel our independent, creative, fiery side.

Aquarius (Jan. 20 – Feb. 18)

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humor, and some style.” – Maya Angelou

What do you need in order to shift from surviving to thriving? It might mean making a major change in your life. Channel some of that headstrong determination and don’t worry so much about what others are going to think.

Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20)

“I don’t necessarily start with the beginning of the book. I just start with the part of the story that’s most vivid in my imagination and work forward and backward from there.” -Beverly Cleary

When you combine your intuition with Aries’ determination, great things can happen. Take, for example, Cleary’s approach to writing. Let her words be your guide right now, Pisces. Whatever is vivid for you, dive in.

Aries (March 21 – April 19)

Just because you’re the quintessential leader doesn’t mean it’s been easy for you to step into your full potential. “All that ever holds somebody back, I think, is fear. For a minute I had fear. [Then] I went into the [dressing] room and shot my fear in the face…” – Lady Gaga

Use your boldness and power to break free of a lingering unhelpful habit and to step into the fearless person you are.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

“I find myself bitter, defensive, and more misanthropic than I care to admit.” – Alec Baldwin

Is this true for you, Taurus? If so, you’re in luck. The next two weeks are a great time for you to shake off any accumulation of negativity. Capitalize on the full-moon energy by dusting off a pursuit you’ve set aside, or by reconnecting with your ability to deeply relax and enjoy your time at home (or on vacation!).

Gemini (May 21 – June 20)

“Without leaps of imagination, or dreaming, we lose the excitement of possibilities. Dreaming, after all, is a form of planning.” – Gloria Steinem

Like Steinem, you are good at dreaming up idealistic plans, for yourself and for society. Keep practicing that skill. Don’t worry if it has a practical application. Let your mind wander and remember how energizing it can be just to dream and imagine.

Cancer (June 21 – July 22)

“I never wanted to be the next Bruce Lee. I just wanted to be the first Jackie Chan.” -Jackie Chan

Cancer, this is a great time to celebrate yourself and your uniqueness. My assignment for you: Clean out your closet. To the best of your ability, make sure your clothes, haircut, houseplants and mode of transportation reflect your badass inner self.

Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22)

“If you are alone you belong entirely to yourself. If you are accompanied by even one companion you belong only half to yourself or even less in proportion to the thoughtlessness of his conduct.” – Leonardo da Vinci

Sometimes being around other people – friends, family, a significant other – can become compulsive, and we resist being alone. But it’s necessary to periodically embrace solitude. Leo, it’s time for you to power-down your electronics and take yourself out for a cup of coffee.

Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22)

“The advice I would give to someone is to not take anyone’s advice.” – Eddie Murphy

Get in touch with your own truths, Virgo, and hold on to them like a compass. How often do you seek guidance outside of yourself and end up feeling more confused or more powerless? I want you to listen to Murphy and channel some of that self-centered Aries energy.

Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22)

“There’s this myth that self-esteem comes from making everything easy for your children and making sure they never fail. Kids learn self-esteem from mastering difficult tasks.” -Barbara Kingsolver

The same is true for you, Libra. Kingsolver stuck peanut butter, bread and a blunt knife in front of her two-year-old. Don’t be afraid to do something challenging – whatever your metaphorical peanut-butter sandwich is. Adopt the mantra Kingsolver gave her kids: “I can do hard things.”

Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21)

“I like being married. It’s an institution that I like.” -Aretha Franklin

Like Aries, Scorpios enjoy being independent, rebellious and self-sufficient. Just don’t let those principles go unexamined, existing for the sake of themselves. Be discriminating and ask yourself what serves you. Sometimes that will look like compromise, or a desk job, or a long-term commitment. Don’t overlook an opportunity that you deem boring or traditional. It might have a lot to offer you.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)

“I don’t want realism. I want magic! Yes, yes, magic! I try to give that to people. I don’t tell the truth, I tell what ought to be the truth. And it that’s sinful, then let me be damned for it!” -Tennessee Williams

Be it through faerie magic or your collection of plastic cutlery, you have a unique ability to find beauty in the world. This is a great time to hone that ability. Spend time outside under the moon, read poetry, record your dreams, go on a pilgrimage. Do whatever it takes to bring you to that place of childlike wonder.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 – Jan. 20)

“At its best, life is completely unpredictable.” – Christopher Walken

Like Aries, you are ambitious and resourceful. Yet, as a Capricorn, you usually possess a more steady and practical attitude. This is a good time to appreciate, and even cultivate, a little bit of a wild, spontaneous approach. Let go of the reins and have faith that everything is going to be OK.
