Football: PCC off to rough start for the year


The Pima Community College football team (0-1) kicked off the 2017 season against the Cardinals of Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas.

The Aztecs were the under- dogs going into this game, as the Cardinals are entering the season ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association. The Cardinals are ranked at number four for the fourth straight year.

The Aztecs struggled with keeping up with the Cardinals on offense and defense, as they lost 57-3.

With only 221 yards of total offence the Aztecs managed to score a field goal in the second quarter by sophomore kicker Coby Oswalt.

The Aztecs had trouble marching down the eld as they turned the ball over five times.

Sophomore quarterback Justin Martin ended the game with 73 yards and with a completion rate of 58.3 percent. Sophomore Kaelin DeBowskie led the group of receivers with 43 yards.

On the other side of the ball, linebacker Francisco Dicochea III lead the defense with nine tackles.

Defensively, the Aztecs gave up 533 yards to the Cardinals.

“The kids took the loss hard they were upset,” said head coach Jim Monaco. “We’re going to try to get ourselves back together and get mentally ready for this next team here.”

The next key match up for the Aztecs is against the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, Arizona Western on Oct. 9.
