Pima Community College (33-14, 21-11 in ACCAC) split their third straight doubleheader April 2 against South Mountain Community College.
The Aztecs earned a run-rule victory in the first game. Their offense and defense were at their best in the 18-0 shutout. Freshmen Courtney Brown and Margaita Corona each hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning.
Freshman Bailey Critchlow won her 16th game of the season. She pitched three shutout innings and allowed only one hit.
PCC lost the second game against SMCC 10-8. The Aztecs came from behind to take the lead 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth innings. The Cougars rallied with four runs in the sixth inning to get the win.
An April 5 doubleheader against Phoenix College took place after Aztec Press went to the printer.
Pima played their third straight home matchup. They split the March 29 doubleheader against Arizona Western College.
The Aztecs won the first game 7-4. The Matadors took the lead early 3-0. PCC exploded with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The inning was highlighted by a two-run home run by sophomore Christine Olivas.
Critchlow earned the win and pitched a complete game. She was also three for four from the plate.
PCC took the early lead in game two. Freshman Gabriella Gorosave hit a homer in the second inning to give Pima a 3-1 lead. The Matadors answered with five runs in the third inning and four in the fourth inning.
The Aztecs split their March 29 double header against Glendale Community College. PCC won the first game 10-8. Brown had four RBIs including a triple that scored three in the second inning.
Orduno pitched a complete game and shutout GCC in the final three innings.
Pima came up short in the second game 12-11. The Aztecs tied the game 9-9 in the seventh. The Gauchos gave up one in the ninth inning before they retired the final three Pima batters to get the win.
Pima swept their doubleheader matchup against Mesa Community College on March 26. The Aztecs exploded for 28 runs in the two home games.
PCC won the first game 11-5. Corona hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning putting Pima up 7-4. Orduno pitched a complete game with three earned runs and three strikeouts.
Pima won the second game 17-11. The Thunderbirds started strong in the second game. They scored seven runs in the second inning taking a 7-4 lead. Corona hit her second homer of the day in the bottom of the second. Her grand slam capped a five run inning and gave back the lead.
Critchlow got the win in relief. She pitched five and two-thirds innings. Critchlow retired the final six batters in order.
