MEN’S TENNIS: Aztecs’ win streak ends


The Pima Community College Aztecs ended their win streak with a shutout loss against Mesa Community College on March 31.

Freshman Marc Avalos tried to make it interesting at the No. 1 spot but was beaten in two sets 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Dalton Reisig lost the No. 2 match 6-1, 6-0. Together Avalos and Reisig lost the No. 1 doubles match 8-2.

Freshman Raj Singh Kaila was defeated at the No. 3 spot 6-1, 6-0. Sophomore Jesus Lopez was shut out at the No. 4 spot 6-0, 6-0. Singh Kaila and Lopez fell at the No. 2 doubles spot 8-0

Sophomore Landon Trejo was also shut out 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot while Freshman Curtis Jeffery lost his No. 6 match 6-1, 6-0. Together they lost their No. 3 doubles match 8-1.

The Aztecs will be looking to rebound on the road against Glendale Community College on April 7.

In their fourth match of the week, the men finished strong with a win against Skagit Valley College 7-2 in a non-conference match on March 26.

Avalos defeated his opponent 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles spot. Reisig won by a closer margin at the No. 2 spot 7-5, 6-3. Avalos and Reisig won their doubles match 8-5 in route to staying unblemished for the day.

Kaila picked up a win at the No. 3 spot 6-3, 6-4. Lopez lost a tough three set match at No. 4 6-7(2-7), 6-0, 10-4. Together, Kaila and Lopez lost their doubles match 8-3.

Trejo won his No. 5 match 6-3, 6-3. Jeffery dominated his opponent, shutting him out 6-0, 6-0. Together they won their doubles match 8-6.

Men’s tennis won their first conference match of the season on March 24 against Paradise Valley Community College 5-4.

Trailing after doubles play, the Aztecs rallied to take four of the six singles matches.

Avalos sealed the victory with a hard fought win at the No. 1 spot. Avalos won the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (7-4) and 7-5 in the second. Freshman Dalton Reisig also won his match at No. 2 6-1, 6-4. Together they lost their No. 1 doubles match 8-4.

Singh Kaila dropped his No. 3 match 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Jesus Lopez lost 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot. Lopez and Singh Kaila lost their No. 2 doubles match.

Trejo won his match at No. 5 singles 6-1, 7-5. Freshman Curtis Jeffery was victorious at the No. 6 spot winning 6-2, 6-0. Together Trejo and Jeffery took the only doubles win for the Aztecs 8-4 at the No. 3 spot.

After traveling to Glendale Community College on April 7 for a 1:30 p.m. game, the Aztecs return home. PCC hosts New Mexico Military Institute on April 8 at the Tucson Racquet Club starting at 11:30 p.m.
