The Pima Community College track and field teams set 10 national qualifiers when it opened outdoor competition March 18-19 at the Willie Williams Invitational at the Roy P. Drachman Stadium in Tucson.Freshman Sam Shoultz tied a school record and established a national qualifier
in the high jump with a distance that measured 7-feet, .50 inches.
“It was awesome to see Sam tie the record,” associate head coach Chad Harrison said. “The record was set by another freshman and I believe it stood for about 30 years so it really is impressive.”
Harrison also applauded Shoultz’s hard work. “Sam’s work ethic is impeccable,” he said. “He never misses a practice.”
Sophomore Mark Bennett took second place in the 5,000 meter race, earning a national qualifying time of 15 minutes, 22.40 seconds.
Sophomore distance runner Ahmed Mohamed also set a national qualifying time in the 1,500 meter race with a time of 4:00.78.
Freshman Isaiah Banks took first place in the long jump with a jump of 23-1.
“Isaiah is another incredibly talented freshman with potential,” Harrison said.
Freshman Treyshone Malone finished seventh in the 400 meter hurdles with a national qualifying time of 54.62 seconds.
On the women’s side of competition, sophomore Jamie Holliday earned two individual national qualifying marks.One came with a fourth-place finish in the long jump, with a leap of 18-4.75.She also registered a fifth-place finish in the triple jump, at 36-11.
“Jamie is getting her long jump going at the right time,” Harrison said. “She has all the potential in the world to retain her No. 1 rank in conference.”
Sophomores Meghan Sweeney and Juliette Cossey earned qualifying times with performances in the long jump and triple jump as well.
Sophomore Meghan Sweeney placed third in the high jump with a national qualifying mark of 5-5. Sophomore Juliette Cossey took third in the triple jump with a qualifying distance of 38-1.
Freshman Katherine Loyd set a personal best and a national qualifying mark in the 5,000-meter race, finishing 10th with a time of 18:43.42.
The 4×100 relay team of sophomore McKenna McGrath, Holliday, and freshmen Amber McCroskey and Hannah Bartz earned a fifth place with a national qualifying time of 47.87 seconds.
Pima has its next opportunity at competition March 24-26 at the Puma Outdoor Distance and Multi-Meet at Paradise Community College in Phoenix. Events begin at 4 p.m. on Thursday and at 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.
