MEN’S TENNIS: Aztecs ready for rebound season


The men’s tennis team was swept by Mesa Community College, losing by a score of 9-0 in their conference opener. Freshman Marc Avalos lost his No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-0. Freshman Dalton Reisig dropped his No. 2 match 6-0, 6-0. Together Avalos and Reisig lost their No. 1 doubles

match 8-0.

Freshman Raj Singh Kaila lost his match at No. 3 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Jesus Lopez fell 6-1,6-0 at the No. 4 spot. Together they lost their No. 2 doubles match 8-1.

Sophomore Landon Trejo also suffered a 6-0, 6-0 defeat at No. 5. Freshman Curtis Jeffery had the most success but also fell 6-2, 6-0 in his No. 6 match. They also dropped their No. 3 doubles match by a score of 8-0.

The team was unable stick it out against Arizona Christian University Feb. 22 in a nonconference match at the Tucson Racquet Club, losing 8-1.

The lone victory for the Aztecs was from Reisig at the No. 2 spot, who posted scores of 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. He was down 3-4 in the third set, but rallied for the win.

Avalos went down at the No. 1 spot in two tie-breaker sets, 7-6 ,7-3 and 7-6, 7-6.

Avalos and Reisig lost the No. 1 doubles match 5-8.

At the No. 3 singles spot, Kaila lost to his opponent after taking the first set 7-5, 0-6, 5-7. Sophomore Jesus Lopez lost at the No. 4 spot 6-1, 6-3. Kaila and Lopez lost their No. 2 doubles match 8-5.

Trejo lost the No. 5 match 6-0, 6-1. Jeffery lost the No. 6 match 6-1, 6-2. Trejo and Jeffery lost 8-1 in the No. 3 doubles.
