Tennis teams rock Imperial Valley

The Pima Community College men’s and women’s tennis teams swept Imperial Valley College on Feb. 8.

The women won every match, earning a team score of 9-0.

In doubles, the No. 1 team of sophomores Amy Beeston and Cayla Cordova won 8-1.

The No. 2 doubles team of sophomore Ashten Watt and freshman Cassidy McWhorter won 8-5.

The No. 3 doubles team of freshmen Yani Alameda and Katlyn Jones also won 8-1.

On the singles side, every player won with ease.

Beeston won 6-2, 6-2 and Cordova won 6-2, 7-5. Watts won 6-1, 6-1. McWhorter won 6-1, 6-4, while freshman Ema Hernandez won 6-3, 6-0.

On the men’s side, the Aztecs swept Imperial Valley on the doubles side but could only manage a split in singles play, going 3-3.

Sophomore Brian Soto won his match 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Gabe Ortiz won by default.

All the drama for the men came during the three doubles matches.

The No. 1 team of freshmen Richie Foitik and Soto won a nail-biter 9-8, 8-6.

In the second doubles match, sophomore Carlos Medina and freshman Josh Henkel won 8-6.

In the third doubles match, freshmen Trey Terry and Ortiz won another nail-biter 9-8 , 9-7.

Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams dominated in their exhibition match.

The Aztecs travel to Mesa Community College for a preseason tournament on Feb. 21-22.
