TOP 10 Most anticipated movies of 2012

By ROBERTO AVENDAÑO

This year is packed with top-of-the-list movie sequels as well as brand new stories. Here is my list of 10 films I’m most excited to see on the big screen:

 10. “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” (Dec. 14)

OK, I’m not a die-hard fan of the Lord of the Rings “universe” but I really enjoyed the “Return of the King.”I also loved the trailer for “The Hobbit,” so I’m pretty excited about this new story and would love to see where it leads.

9. “Wrath of the Titans” (March 30)

This is the sequel to the 2010 movie “Clash of the Titans.” Both installments have two things I love: mythology and action. Sam Worthington is back as Perseus to kick some serious Titan butt, the effects look amazing and I’m hoping that this movie surpasses its awesome predecessor.

8. “John Carter” (March 9)

Seeing the trailer for this upcoming movie was the first time I had ever heard about John Carter, who is originally a character in a novel series created by Edgar Rice Burroughs. The action packed and fast paced scenes in the trailer totally sold the movie for me.

7. “Paranormal Activity 4” (Oct. 19)

I’m not a big fan of horror movies — not because they scare me but because I usually find the story boring or the effects unconvincing. The “Paranormal Activity” series is an exception for me, even though the story isn’t that complex. It scares the heck out of me to the point that I have to carry a lighter to go to the restroom in the night. (If you say you’ve never done it, you’re lying!)

6. “The Amazing Spider-man” (July 3)

First of all, I loved the Sam Raimi trilogy… bring on the heat! I really liked Spidey’s suit and Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker and all the rest of the cast in the three movies (except for Topher Grace as Venom, which was a huge disappointment for me). I already hate everything about the reboot, starting from the “spider-girl” costume and ending with Andrew Garfield, but this actually makes me want to check the movie out to see if it changes my mind.

5. “Taken 2” (Oct. 5)

When I went to the movies with a group of friends a few years ago, most of the “big movies” were sold out so we decided to watch “Taken.” I don’t regret it one bit. This movie has the most bad-ass Liam Neeson I’ve ever seen. I had zero hope for the first one and ended up loving it. For this one, I have infinite hope. Let’s hope I don’t end up crying after the credits roll.

4. “Men in Black III” (May 25)

10 Ten years in the making… 10 years! From the looks of it, it may be the best of them all. Will Smith isn’t the Prince of Bel-Air anymore and has become one of the most recognized actors in the industry. It brings a lot of nostalgia to see him back in the black suit to bust some illegal aliens.

3. “Skyfall” (Nov. 9)

This is Daniel Craig’s third James Bond movie, personally one of my favorite 007s alongside Sir Sean Connery. Craig’s Bond brings a new air to the franchise. Instead of being the scratch-less tuxedo kind of Bond, he is ruthless and a bit of a troublemaker. Let’s hope that “Skyfall” doesn’t end up as a major disillusion, like its predecessor “Quantum of Solace.”

2. “The Avengers” (May 4)

After making cameos in the Thor, Iron Man, Hulk, and Captain America movies, S.H.I.E.L.D.s Nick Fury will get more than five minutes of screen time. This kind of multi-sequel-movie has so much buildup and so much to deal with that the possibility of disappointment seems pretty certain. I hope director Joss Whedon takes the best from all the movies that unite in this one, and gives us a hell of a ride.

1. “The Dark Knight Rises” (July 20)

Finally the last episode of the critically acclaimed Christopher Nolan “Batman” movies is here. Nolan corrected everything from the past Batman movies, like the nipples on the bat-suit and the immovable neck that looked as if the suit had an integrated neck brace. The story in this series is just epic, from the birth of the dark knight to the appearance of Heath Ledger’s magnificent Joker.  I’m counting the days for this movie because I just know it’s going to be legendary.
