PCC Music Briefs

Pima Community College’s performing arts department will present concerts ranging from opera to jazz to wind ensemble between April 22 and May 5.

Each concert will take place in the West Campus Center for the Arts Proscenium Theatre. Tickets cost $6 per concert, with discounts and group rates available.

Opera and Musical Theater Scenes – April 22-23

Fully staged performances from popular operas and musicals will take place April 22-23 under the musical direction of Dean Schoff and stage direction of Anna Schoff.

Friday’s performance is at 7 p.m. There will be two performances on Saturday, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Program selections include scenes from “Cosi fan tutte” and “The Abduction from the Seraglio” by Mozart. Other scenes come from “Manon” by Massenet, “Gypsy” by Styne, “Candide” by Bernstein, “The Consul” by Menotti and “The Gondaliers” by Gilbert and Sullivan.

The performances are the finale for a PCC course that studies operas, musicals, voice, acting and stagecraft.

Jazz Improv Combos – April 25


Two jazz combo groups will perform in concert  Monday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Mike Kuhn.

Each jazz combo group has a rhythm section, horns and a vocalist. Each group plays its own set list, taken from jazz standards and Great American Songbook selections.

The program will include “Perdido” by Duke Ellington, “My Little Suede Shoes” by Charlie Parker, “Take the A Train” by Billy Strayhorn and “Take Five” by Paul Desmond.

Standards include “It’s You or No One,” “It Could Happen to You,” “Green Dolphin Street” and “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To.”

The improv combos are formed from a PCC weekly improvisation class. Students also perform at other venues, and have an opportunity to cut a demonstration CD at a professional studio.

Jazz Ensemble – May 3


If you’re “in the mood” for music written by Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Buddy Rich or Benny Goodman, you’re in luck.

PCC’s Jazz Ensemble will perform tributes to big band artists and contemporary selections during a concert Tuesday, May 3, at 7:30 p.m. under the direction of Mike Kuhn.

Program selections include “In the Mood,” “Li’l Darlin,” “Big Swing Face” and “Sing, Sing, Sing.”

Wind Ensemble – May 5


On Cinco de Mayo, the PCC Wind Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. in its final concert of the 2010-11 20th Anniversary Season.

Under the direction of Mark Nelson, the program includes musical selections from “Incantation and Dance,” “Lincolnshire Posy,” “Little English Girl,” “The Ride of Die Valkyries” and “Overture in Contrasts.”

Student Dana Doyle will be the featured soloist, performing “Suite for Euphonium and Band” by Donald Haddad.

The brass ensemble, percussion ensemble, flute choir, clarinet choir and saxophone ensemble will also perform.
